Hydrostatic correction for sigma coordinate ocean models

چکیده
[1] How to reduce the horizontal pressure gradient error is a key issue in terrain-following coastal models. The horizontal pressure gradient splits into two parts, and incomplete cancellation of the truncation errors of those parts cause the error. Use of the finite volume discretization leads to a conserved scheme for pressure gradient computation that has better truncation properties with high accuracy. The analytical coastal topography and seamount test cases are used to evaluate the new scheme. The accuracy of the new scheme is comparable to the sixth-order combined compact scheme (with an error reduction by a factor of 70 comparing to the second-order scheme) with mild topography and much better than the sixth-order combined compact scheme with steep topography. The computational efficiency of the new scheme is comparable to the second-order difference scheme. The two characteristics, high accuracy and computational efficiency, make this scheme useful for the sigma coordinate ocean models.

Numerical Modeling of Nonlinear Water Waves with Sigma Coordinate and Layer Thickness Optimization
This paper presents a numerical model for simulating fully dispersive, nonlinear water waves in coastal areas. A finite difference method based on the Keller-Box scheme is used to solve the incompressible Euler equations with the free-surface boundary conditions. The sigma coordinate transformation maps the irregular physical domain with the wavy free surface and the uneven bottom to a rectangu...
متن کاملThe response of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas to a summer Mistralevent: A coupled atmosphereâ•fiocean approach
In this paper the effect of a summer Mistral event on the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas in the northwestern Mediterranean is discussed, using a coupled numerical model and satellite and in situ observations. The focus is on the spatial and temporal distribution of the ocean mixed layer response to the strong winds, and on how this is affected by atmosphere–ocean coupling. The model used is the C...
متن کاملSixth-Order Difference Scheme for Sigma Coordinate Ocean Models
How to reduce the horizontal pressure gradient error is a key issue of using s-coordinate ocean models, especially of using primitive equation models for coastal regions. The error is caused by the splitting of the horizontal pressure gradient term into two parts and the subsequent incomplete cancellation of the truncation errors of those parts. Due to the fact that the higher the order of the ...
متن کاملSome Ocean Model Fundamentals
The purpose of these lectures is to present elements of the equations and algorithms used in numerical models of the large-scale ocean circulation. Such models generally integrate the ocean’s primitive equations, which are based on Newton’s Laws applied to a continuum fluid under hydrostatic balance in a spherical geometry, along with linear irreversible thermodynamics and subgrid scale (SGS) p...
متن کاملOn the Seasonal Mixed Layer Simulated by a Basin-Scale Ocean Model and the Mellor-Yamada Turbulence Scheme
Seasonal changes and vertical mixing processes in the upper layers of the North Atlantic Ocean are simulated with a basin-scale sigma coordinate ocean model that uses the Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure scheme. The cause of insufficient surface mixing and a too shallow summertime thermocline, common problems of ocean models of this type, is investigated in etail by performing a series of sensi...
